My husband & I both didn't really come from families that camp very much. I had been once or twice in childhood, but my hubby had never been. When the opportunity presented itself to go camping with family friends, I knew we had to do it. Take 4 kids below age 5 camping (1 currently teething) & a 5+ month pregnant wife? Why not? My hubby is an amazing man. We love exposing the girls to new adventures & nurturing a love/respect for the great outdoors is very important to us. So, any apprehension was put aside & off we went.
I will admit that sleeping in a tent with wild animals around at night was the largest hurdle I had to overcome & the fact that an elk almost hit us on the way up didn't help, but right for the moment we got there I was forced to face that fear head on (we arrived at the campsite at 9 or 10pm). I had to show no fear to my ladies, ignore the wildlife flying overheard (bats), & try to show them what roughing it was all about! There were some cold nights, but the ladies did pretty well overall.
Dirt, rocks, bugs, sticks, animals, great people-What else do you need? The girls definitely got dirty every second of every day, but they loved every single moment of it. Eating Popsicles by the lake, watching an elk poop in the lake up close and personal, Aidy catching her first fish, watching a fish get gutted, feeding squirrels crackers, bug collecting with their kits, building dirt/rock castles, playdoh fun, storytelling, relaxing in the hammock, yummy meals, family walks, soccer games, sitting by the fire with s'mores & popcorn, & everything was a blast! The kiddos cried when we had to leave!!! Our family is definitely hooked & we will be back very soon. Wonderful memories were definitely made. It was nice to just relax with minimal distractions with the ones I love dearly! I definitely recommend it, maybe a pop up trailer next time for shower sake when you have babies, lol. They sure can get dirty.
